Global Climate Advocacy

Climate change doesn’t just affect us here in Clark County. It is a global issue that requires international cooperation and coordinated solutions at all levels. To tackle climate change and its negative impacts, world leaders at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris adopted the Paris Agreement on December 12, 2015.

What is the Paris Agreement?

The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty aimed at addressing the negative effects of climate change. The Agreement sets long-term goals to guide all nations to:

  • Limit the average global temperature increase to well below 2 degrees centigrade (and pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5);
  • Enhance resilience to climate impacts, many of which will be unavoidable due to greenhouse gases already emitted;
  • Align financial flows in the world with these objectives.

How does this relate to Clark County?

The All-In Community Sustainability and Climate Action Plan is our commitment to reduce our region's contribution to climate change and prepare for its impacts. In September 2019, the Clark County Board of Commissioners resolved to undertake a serious county-wide planning effort around climate and sustainability. Shortly after, the Board adopted a resolution to join the County Climate Coalition, "committing to the goals of the Paris Agreement to combat climate change and promote environmental sustainability."

Since reducing emissions must be a global commitment, Clark County developed our plan to align with the national and international GHG reduction targets and goals.
