Climate Hazards in Clark County

Now that you know what climate change is and why it's happening, let's dive into how it is affecting us here in Clark County.

Here in Clark County, we have already begun to feel the impacts of a changing climate. Increasing greenhouse gas emissions yield two major climate impacts: higher temperatures and more volatile precipitation events. Although Clark County experiences a variety of hazards (including extreme winds), there are four main hazards currently linked to climate change that are already affecting the County: extreme heat, drought, flooding, and wildfires.

In turn, these hazards can result in climate impacts, which threaten our communities' cultures and traditions, natural world, economy, and overall way of life. Some climate impacts include:

  • Heat-related illness
  • Poor air quality
  • Higher energy demands & costs
  • Pavement buckling
  • Smoke
  • Water shortages
  • Poor water quality
  • Infrastructure & property damage
  • Blocked roadways
  • Crop & habitat damage
